After an unbelievably beautiful June that followed a very wet May, we are now into July and it appears mother nature is going to play nice again this year allowing Breckenridge to host it’s annual Independence Day firework celebration on Tuesday, July 4th. While there aren’t many bad viewing area’s, I wanted to give you the inside scoop on where the BEST places to view the fireworks in Breckenridge are!
Boreas Pass Road
Remember the scene in “Dumb and Dumber” where Harry & Lloyd finally reach “Aspen”? Well, that’s actually Breckenridge…and that road is Boreas Pass Road, which overlooks the town of Breckenridge from slope side. This area will provide you a full panoramic view of Breckenridge’s historical Main Street with the Ten Mile Mountain Range as the back drop, perfect for viewing the fireworks from the Gondola Lot right in the middle of town.
Directions: From Main St., head south to highway 9 until you come to a stop light. (intersection of Broken Lance, Boreas Pass rd., and hwy 9) Turn onto Boreas Pass and proceed straight. After coming around the bend (do not veer off Boreas rd) find a place to park on the side of the road and enjoy!
Ski Hill Road
An easy to get to and convenient area to view the fireworks is right off of Ski Hill Rd on the way up to the Peak 8 base area. This small viewing area offers excellent views of Main St. and is located in close proximity to where the fireworks are launched from. On the way up Ski Hill, following the switch back you will find a small viewing lot on your left hand side (right hand if coming down from Ski Hill).
Carter Park
If you are looking for a more traditional, gather the family and a few blankets to lay down on the grass watching the fireworks then head over to Carter Park located at the end of High St., just a few blocks east of Main St. With grills, a pavilion, and large grassy areas to hang out at or play, Carter park offers the best variety of options if you are looking to make an evening out of the fireworks or need to entertain little ones in your party.
For the extreme: Baldy Mountain
If you’ve got that extra gear and enjoy hikes, quite possibly the best place to watch the fireworks is to hike up baldy mountain and catch a birds eye view of the display. From up top of Baldy you’ll have views of miles and miles of mountain tops and just below you our quintessential little mountain town sparkling in the valley.
